Discussion List
Discussion List Policy
The WMJPC email group is open and available for anyone who has an interest in learning about or promoting justice and peace causes. We welcome members of any of the groups affiliated with the West Michigan Justice and Peace Coalition, as well as others who would like to find out more about the activities of the WMJPC.
The email distribution list serves three basic purposes, as outlined below:
- Announcements: Events and actions sponsored by the Coalition or any of the member groups, as well as groups not formally aligned with the WMJPC but likely to be of interest to subscribers, may be publicized on this list.
- Networking: The Email list provides a unique ability to connect with people who might want to get involved in a project, to enlist their support, to make suggestions for others to consider or to work out logistical details when face-to-face meetings aren't practical.
- Discussion: "Justice and peace" are broad categories that encompass many different concerns in our society. Sometimes it can be helpful to share our thoughts on an issue in a public forum, and see what kind of feedback it generates when others read what we have to say. This list can serve as such a forum for those who want to participate in a dialogue on current events.
Here are a few guidelines for what kind of email is considered inappropriate for this list.
- Harassment, personal attacks, excessive use of profanity, or other forms of abusive language.
- Commercial promotions, advertising or unsolicited email ("spam"). Note: Media produced by WMJPC members, or other justice- and peace-related items, may be mentioned in emails as long as it's clear that this is not part of a "marketing campaign."
- Sexually explicit or exploitative material.
Here are a few other considerations for subscribers to keep in mind.
- Try to direct your message content to the group as much as possible. Remember that many people will receive the message and may not be interested in reading strictly personal conversation. Consider if a reply is better to send to an individual or the whole list.
- When quoting messages, trim away parts of the message that are not relevant to your response. This is helpful to those who receive lots of email and want to get through their messages quickly and clearly. It also makes it much easier to read for those who receive this list in digest form.
- If you are experiencing difficulties with the functioning of the list, please contact the moderator off-list if possible and he will assist you with fixing the problem.
These guidelines are posted on the group homepage, and may occasionally be sent as a reminder to list subscribers. They may be revised as the moderator, Coalition members or subscribers find necessary. Thank you, and we hope you find this list beneficial in your work to achieve justice and peace in our society and our world.
